Learn what the experts are saying about Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch with this literary review. Dark themes prevail throughout the novel as protagonist Theo Decker copes with the violent and untimely death of his mother. As a 13-year-old boy, Theo's grasp of reality is limited, and the tragic event forces despair and self-defeating behavior. With sophisticated themes like death, abuse, and sex, this book is better suited for a mature audience. If you are looking for an intellectually stimulating audiobook that keeps you guessing, then The Goldfinch may be just what you need.

The Goldfinch Donna Tartt Review (Audible Audio Edition) Expert Book Reviews Julie Sears Books

I like reading about art based books that find true art appreciation, however “The Goldfinch” can be a little dragged out at times plot wise. Reading literary review’s version of the book helped me understand the basic plotline and meanings behind the characters and provided an in depth analysis of why the writer wrote it. I highly recommend this book to newer readers delving into adult oriented books to provide a deeper understanding. Great for parents trying to help their kids understand the book.

Not my cup of tea
Hated this book..don't know what the fuss was all about....couldn't relate to this very disturbed character and life at all.
This review does a great job at describing the type of reader that would enjoy "The Goldfinch" discussing some of the themes withing the book as well as discussing the length of it. They make it quite obvious this is not a book for the younger crowd. It points out that this book is reflective of relality and does not have the typical happy ending. It tells you about the author and some of the other things she has had published as well as some her other books. It explains how some of the things within her novels could be a reflection of things that happened in her own life, which she keeps completely private. This review also explains some of the hidden meanings within the novel such as the pink scarfs worn by Pippa and Theo's mother representing the love he has for them. This review really helps you understand the book and the meanings behind everything within it.
Some twist and turns.
I've edited a number of novels and wish I could have gotten my hands on this book before it was printed. The author spent ten years on the book and it shows. Shared way too much of her research and let it get in the way of what is really a great story. In my book club NO ONE really liked the book. Most didn't even finish it. I have to admit that I slogged through it mostly because it won a Pulitzer and I wanted to see why. At the end, I saw the reason-- and a very good one -- she came to a very wholesome conclusion about the meaning of life. So -- a Pulitzer Prize for philosophy -- not necessarily for writing the best novel ever. And it could have been. Why couldn't her publisher have helped her out? Isn't that their business?
Story is interesting, but could easily have been told in less words. The author is definitely a wordy writer. However, her descriptions are vivid to the point that she places you in the scene she is describing. the philosophy and "meat" of the book is in the ending chapter, which gives a lot of food for thought. I liked the story, but would liked it even better if there had been less lengthy and frequent descriptive paragraphs to plow through. BB
The Goldfinch is above all a moving and wonderful story, a world where you want to stay for a long time, hoping the best for Theo, after all. It fills you with a great sorrow, thinking about how suddenly a life can change. Theo, Boris, Hobie, the lost mother, the poor drowned friend - they are alive in your mind for a long time. The painting above all! So small, so simple, so unpretentious, but with the bird's eye as a powerful reminder about seeing and being seen, about the significance of art. Of love, which also is a matter of being seen, seeing.
